Chakra Massage

Ayurveda, a traditional healing system from India dating back at least 5,000 years, gave us the concept of chakra, a Sanskrit word often translated as "wheel." Chakras describe several energy centers within the body. By working with this energy flow through targeted massage techniques, therapists can help clients pursue chakra balancing for healing and greater well-being.

HICI Go is an online center hosting a wide catalog of health and beauty courses for people across the U.S. With a goal of expanding the skills of massage therapists and anyone drawn to the field, HICI Go offers a range of massage courses, chakra massage included.

What Are Chakras?

Chakras are part of a broader Ayurvedic system describing the physical and energetic body. Correspondences have been mapped between chakras organs and nerves. When the system is balanced, life force energy, known by names like prana, chi and shakti, flows freely in ways that support health. This flow is described as running from the base of the spine through at least seven chakras, up past the crown of the head. Here’s a brief look at the most commonly recognized chakras:

Muladhara or Root Chakra

Located at the base of the spine where it meets the pelvis, this chakra is foundational, tied to stability, mobility, courage and security.

Svadhisthana or Sacral Chakra

Located at the base of the spine where it meets the pelvis, this chakra is foundational, tied to stability, mobility, courage and security.

Manipura or Solar Plexus Chakra

Located in the stomach area below the ribs, this chakra governs digestion, both of food and information and represents personal power and transformation.

Anahata or Heart Chakra

Centered in the chest near the heart, this chakra connects to compassion, forgiveness, love and relationships.

Vishudda or Throat Chakra

Located in the throat, this chakra relates to authenticity, communication and speaking one’s truth.

Ajna or Third Eye Chakra

Positioned between the eyes, this chakra is tied to intuition, spiritual awareness and decision-making.

Sahasrara or Crown Chakra

Located at the top of the head, this chakra connects to the broader source of life energy, representing higher awareness, collective consciousness and personal purpose.

What Is Chakra Massage?

Chakra massage works to encourage energy balance along this path of chakra centers. The therapist draws on chakra knowledge to identify blockages, imbalances or dysfunction, tuning into the client’s energetic state through both physical observation and intuition. Techniques used may include:

  • Deep tissue: Focused work on physical areas connected to specific chakras
  • Foot reflexology: Pressure applied to points on the foot linked to chakras and internal organs
  • Essential oils: Plant-based oils chosen to correspond with specific chakras or body areas
  • Heated stones: Smooth stones placed intuitively on the body, often along the spine
  • Light touch: Gentle contact centered on each chakra
  • Guided meditation: Often used to close out the session for deeper calm and well-being

Benefits of Chakra Massage

Chakra massage can ease physical discomfort while also supporting emotional health. Balanced energy gives clients more to draw from, while imbalances often reflect blockages that keep energy from flowing freely.

Some clients struggle to let go of certain experiences or the feelings tied to them. Chakra massage can support that process of release and integration. Alongside stress relief, it can also sharpen mental focus and build the ability to stay calm through difficult emotions.
