Find Classes for Many Types of Massage

Massage is a growing, holistic approach to health and wellness and since everyone carries stress differently, there is no single technique that fits all. Whether you are a professional looking to expand your spa or salon’s service menu or simply someone interested in your own well-being, HICI Go has a course to match. Here’s a look at some of the techniques covered:

Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic massage relieves stress and can support people managing anxiety, depression and other mental health concerns. It’s also used as an alternative to medication for treating injury or muscle pain. Becoming a licensed massage therapist typically requires certification through a recognized body like the American Massage Therapy Association or the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.

Several techniques fall under this category:

  • Sports massage: Helps athletes prepare for training and supports recovery after a sports-related injury
  • Deep tissue: Uses stronger pressure to release muscle tension for clients dealing with intense pain
  • Swedish massage: One of the most widely used techniques, this full-body method eases muscle discomfort, reduces mental stress and supports circulation

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy offers real health benefits, including better muscle movement and reduced inflammation. It’s often recommended for chronic back pain, muscle tension, headaches, migraines or joint issues and is typically performed by physical therapists with deep knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Techniques include:

  • Cupping therapy: Uses cups to create suction, drawing toxins from tissue while stimulating blood flow, relaxation and pain relief. Sometimes used for facial massage as well.
  • Lymphatic drainage massage: Commonly used for lymphedema, a condition causing painful swelling in the arms and legs, by gently guiding lymph fluid from tissue toward the lymph nodes
  • Craniosacral therapy: A gentle, hands-on method that eases tension and encourages fluid flow to calm the nervous system

Bowen Therapy

Bowen therapy takes a holistic approach, aiming to address the root cause rather than just relieve symptoms. It involves gently stretching fascia, the body’s soft connective tissue, to ease pain and support treatment of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions.

A related technique, active isolated stretching, targets key muscle groups to restore function and health across both superficial and deep fascial layers.

Ultrasonic Cavitation

This non-surgical treatment uses ultrasound technology to break down cellulite and localized fat. The vibrations generate enough pressure to turn fat cells into liquid which the body naturally eliminates. It’s sometimes used as part of a broader weight-loss plan.

Hospice Massage Therapy

Massage therapy can be a meaningful part of hospice care, helping patients manage the physical and emotional symptoms, such as pain and depression, that often accompany end-of-life care.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage places smooth, flat stones on the body to ease tense muscles and support healing in damaged soft tissue. The stones are usually basalt, a volcanic rock known for holding heat well.

Thai Massage

Sometimes called the lazy man’s yoga, Thai massage is a distinctive technique where the practitioner uses their entire body, hands and feet included, to apply deep, targeted pressure.

Chakra Massage

Rooted in the Sanskrit concept of seven energy centers in the body, chakra massage pairs this philosophy with various healing techniques, sometimes incorporating essential oils, to support better energy flow.

Reiki Massage

Reiki massage aims to bring the body’s internal energy into balance. Through manual technique, it works to restore energy flow and relaxation, supporting physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.

Through in-person classes, live webinars and on-demand video courses, HICI Go offers a wide selection of ways to learn these techniques.
