There's no shortage of ways to remove unwanted hair and sugaring is one estheticians use to combine hair removal with gentle exfoliation. HICI Go offers courses on sugaring for professionals and curious learners alike, available across the U.S. through live webinars, on-demand video and select live, in-person instruction.
People remove hair for all kinds of reasons and every method, from shaving and waxing to depilatories, electrolysis and sugaring, leaves its own mark on how skin looks and feels. HICI Go’s skincare courses help both practitioners and enthusiasts build real technique and knowledge for healthier, better-looking skin. Sugaring in particular tends to be gentler on skin than traditional waxing.
Like waxing, sugaring uses a thick, sticky paste to lift unwanted hair from the root. Traditional wax, whether natural beeswax or a manufactured blend, is solid at room temperature and melts when heated. It’s applied warm, topped with a paper or cloth strip and once it cools and adheres to both skin and hair, pulled off using the strip.
Sugaring paste, by contrast, comes from simple, natural ingredients: sugar, water and lemon, heated into a candy-like consistency and fully cooled before application. Unlike wax, sugaring paste sticks only to the hair, not the skin. Once it dries, the practitioner uses a gloved hand to gather and lift the paste away, pulling the hair out with it.
One key difference between the two techniques is temperature. Wax that hasn’t cooled enough can burn the skin, while sugaring paste is always applied fully cooled. Application direction differs too: wax goes on with the grain of hair growth, while sugaring paste is applied against it, which can lead to more complete hair removal at the follicle. Like waxing, sugaring works on the face, underarms, arms, legs, back and groin area.
Choosing between waxing and sugaring often comes down to personal preference. Regrowth timing is similar for both and hair tends to come back softer and finer either way. Sugaring does offer one extra benefit though: light exfoliation, removing dead skin cells and leaving skin looking a bit brighter in the process.
Many clients also appreciate that sugaring relies on all-natural ingredients. For estheticians, learning this technique is a valuable addition to a continuing education path, since it’s an in-demand service that tends to draw in new clients. It’s also a great option to offer clients whose skin reacts poorly to wax, helping you retain them instead of losing them to a different service.
